ABOUT US

Why We Don't Use Sedation for Grooming

Sedation has historically been used to calm dogs during grooming, but it’s no longer a favored approach. This isn’t just because of safety concerns, but also because of its limited effectiveness.

The main issue with sedation is that it can lower a dog’s blood pressure. When a dog is stressed or anxious, sedation tends to be less effective. In fact, once a dog encounters a situation that triggers adrenaline, it can fight the sedation, leading to anxiety and potential risks, including a sudden stop in the heart rate.

Sedating a dog for grooming should never be done without the supervision of a veterinarian who can monitor the dog’s heart rate. If you’ve tried other options without success, consider finding a groomer who works with a vet, ensuring your dog is under proper supervision, and their heart rate is carefully monitored.

Sedatives should only be used as a last resort, such as when a dog doesn’t respond to behavior modification or when there’s a risk of defensive biting. Your dog’s safety is our top priority, and we want to ensure that any sedation is administered with the utmost care.

Please be aware, if your dog does require sedation, make sure there is a veterinarian present during the grooming process.
